The airplane is the wreckage of what we call Pilot Specter, a small craft that crashed on the trail some years back. Pilot Specter's wreckage marks the top of the last long uphill pull in the race, cresting Stoppel Point. This year runners were in the clouds when they reached the top, making for a surreal scene signifying the end of the last climb.
